Grammar instruction will take place during Writer's Workshop. Mechanics and spelling will be taught during the Writer's Workshop block using the Lucy Calkins writing units and a word study program called Words Their Way. This is a word study program in which students learn by sorting words into categories. Students are given the task of making sense of words on their own terms. They are looking for patterns in spelling and sound in order to categorize words.
WTW does not teach spelling rules, but instead offers opportunities for hands-on, developmentally appropriate word work which leads to a greater understanding of our spelling system. Students will apply the word pattern skills in their writing during literacy stations and Writer's Workshop.
